2008 IRA Investment
An IRA can be invested in a CD, Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds and Real Estate. Those are the most popular IRA investment options. Many savers assume that an IRA has to be invested in the stock market - this is simply not true. Perhaps the source of confusion is the fact that the biggest IRA providers are stock brokerage or online discount brokerage firms. Other IRA providers are your local savings bank for example.
Even if you open an IRA with a discount broker, your IRA investment does not have to be in individual stocks. You can always choose a CD (many discount brokers offer those), Mutual Funds or Bonds (such as Treasury Bills). Your other choice is to open an IRA account with your local savings bank and make an IRA investment in a Certificate of Deposit or CD. There are prohibited IRA investments though. These include collectibles such as artwork, antiques, stamps, coins, and gems to name a few.
